Light Gauge Steel in Affordable Housing: A Solution for East Africa

Light Gauge Steel in Affordable Housing: A Solution for East Africa

Bridging the Housing Gap with Speed and Precision

With over 50% of East Africa’s urban population living in informal settlements, the need for affordable, durable housing is urgent.

Light-Gauge Steel (LGS) construction, supported by Framecad’s software, offers a scalable solution.

Why LGS for Housing?

  • Design Flexibility: Create narrow walls for more interior space, perfect for high-density urban areas.
  • Reduced Labor Dependency: Prefabricated panels cut onsite labor needs by 50%, lowering costs.
  • Compliance: Framecad software ensures designs meet local building codes, reducing delays.

Success in Action

The Mariposa Phase VII, the final phase of the South Lincoln HOPE VI redevelopment project in Denver, is a 7-story apartment building with units reserved for the use of both senior and disabled persons. Part of one of Denver’s oldest neighborhoods, and bordering the Santa Fe Arts District, the University of Colorado Denver, Denver’s Central Business District, and RTD’s new Light Rail, the Mariposa building is a blend of new and old, and is the final piece in a two-decades long urban revitalization.

The Mariposa VII project in Colorado (a 7-story CFS apartment) demonstrates how multi-family housing can be built swiftly.

In East Africa, this approach could:

  • Deliver low-cost apartments in Nairobi’s slum-upgrading initiatives.
  • Construct worker accommodations for industrial hubs in Mombasa.
  • Scale social housing programs in Rwanda’s Gacuriro Estate.

Sustainability Edge
LGS’s recyclability supports environmental, social, and governance goals, appealing to investors and governments prioritizing green infrastructure.
